Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, Latvia (then part of the Russian Empire), is one of the most influential painters of the 20th century and a major figure in Abstract Expressionism. In 1913, his family emigrated to the United States, where he quickly discovered his passion for art.
